Tagamet is a medicine to treat/prevent ulcers in the small intestine or stomach, and treat GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) It may also treat the esophagus inflammation (esophagitis) due to acid reflux and some other conditions causing increased secretion of acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It may also be used by your physician to treat certain other conditions.
It refers to H2–blockers (histamine blockers). It works by reducing acid in the stomach by blocking one of the chemicals (histamine) that stimulates the production of stomach acid. This decreases stomach acidity.
