Generic name: Famotidine

Pepcid is a medicine to prevent/treat ulcers and also heartburn due to sour stomach or acid indigestion. It is also used for the treatment of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), or disorders causing esophagitis and acid secretion. It may also be used by your physician to treat certain other conditions.

It refers to H2–blockers (histamine blockers). It works by reducing acid in the stomach by blocking one of the chemicals (histamine) that stimulates the production of stomach acid.
