Omalizumab is a medicine to treat persistent asthma (moderate to severe) in patients having positive allergy skin tests and when the symptoms cannot be controlled by the use of inhaled corticosteroids.
It refers to anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) monoclonal antibodies. It blocks the natural response of the immune system to the allergens, causing acute asthma attacks. The action of IgE on the immune system promotes keeping of the air passages open and better controlling asthma over time.
