Amifostine is used in ovarian cancer patients to lower the damage of kidney associated with cisplatin chemotherapy. The medicine is used to reduce dry mouth (moderate to severe) caused by post surgery radiation treatment in patients with neck and head cancer. It may also be used by your physician to treat certain other conditions.
It refers to cytoprotective agents. It detoxifies and binds to cisplatin metabolites, thus reducing kidney toxicity. It also decreases harmful radiation influence on healthy tissues.
