Alosetron is used to treat severe IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) in women with severe diarrhea (lasting more than 6 months). It is prescribed when other medicines do not help. It should not be used by women with constipation as a main IBS problem. When the medicine is prescribed certain intestinal or stomach disorders should be ruled out first.
It refers to selective 5HT3 receptor antagonists. The medicine stops the serotonin action on the intestines. This helps to decrease stomach discomfort and pain, cramping, diarrhea, and urgency due to IBS.
