Is It True That Yogurt Can Treat Gastrointestinal Ulcers?

February 25th, 2010 | Under: Articles, Gastrointestinal »

Yogurt is a milk product that is known to have a source of protein, calcium and other nutrients. Many yogurt brands contain probiotics (some bacteria types presumably have positive effects on the digestive issues).

The new yogurt type might become a unique approach to combat stomach ulcers. This is actually the latest product in the growing market of functional foods that generates $60 million annually. In fact, stomach ulcers can affect about 25 million people every year just in the US.

As the researchers state, yogurt can help people enjoy its taste, and at the same time prevent and eliminate the bacteria which are thought to be the cause of stomach ulcers.

Researchers consider that this new yogurt already available in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan will soon reach the shelves of the US.

Stomach Ulcers

Stomach ulcers are mostly known to be provoked by bacteria, under the name helicobacter pylori, and by the overuse of aspirin and some other nonsteroidal anti inflammatory medications. In past times the ulcers caused by H. pylori were treated and eliminated effectively with the help of acid suppressants and antibiotics; though, for millions people stricken with and suffering from helicobacter pylori ulcers, those treatments might be just unavailable.

According to the researches results childhood helicobacter pylori-induced ulcers were linked to more severe health disorders like impaired growth and malnutrition. And scientists from all over the world couldn’t find a way that would be more accessible and economical for treating the diseases caused by the bacteria.

Yogurt and Ulcers

Though yogurt turns out to be less effective compared to antibiotics in curing the ulcers caused by H. pylori, it is surely more accessible and besides you can eat it every day. Antibodies have no effects on yogurt taste.

But we should note here that as yogurt represents a milk product which contains as well egg yolk, people suffering from the allergy to eggs and milk cannot eat the new anti-ulcer yogurt. Additionally, unlike antibiotics that are once used, can resolve the problem, yogurt should be consumed every day on a regular basis. This means that unless a person wants to avoid taking antibiotics, it may be more effective to choose a permanent solution (this is antibiotics) than to consume a product for all your life.
