Your doctor measures it every visit, but what really is blood pressure?

Blood pressure generally refers to the force with which the blood circulating over the body presses on the arteries’ walls. The heart is at the top point when it beats and pumps blood into the body’s arteries.

The highpoint is usually named systolic pressure. The lowest pressure point on the walls of arteries takes place between the heartbeats and is named by the term diastolic pressure. Blood pressure readings are usually measured in mmHg (millimeters of mercury) and are presented with diastolic and systolic pressure. 120/80 mmHg is considered a classic normal blood pressure which we pronounce like ‘120 over 80’. The systolic pressure is represented by the top number and the diastolic pressure in its turn is represented by the bottom number.

Regular control is of high importance as pressure disorders often show no symptoms. Blood pressure in our bodies changes many times during a day. The lowest blood pressure is generally at night time when people sleep or when you are just having a rest.

High blood pressure is represented by the term hypertension. In case of hypertension a strain is put on the heart thus it has to work harder. High blood pressure increases the risks of such disorders as heart failure and stroke. In most cases it is unknown what exactly causes hypertension. However there are several risk factors that are genetic. For instance people who have family members suffering from hypertension are more predisposed to this disorder. Obesity, stress, smoking, as well as sedentary lifestyle are the conditions which increase the risk of high blood pressure.

Low blood pressure is named by the term hypotension. This disorder is also dangerous because sometimes hypotension can serve as a sign of serious health problems.

Today people can easily check their blood pressure using digital monitors. These devices are very useful for the humans who are trying to control and normalize the blood pressure by the help of some diet or drugs and therefore they need to measure BP regularly. Consult the doctor if you notice any abnormalities in the blood pressure readings. High/low blood pressure needs additional tests to manage the underlying factors.
