Levaquin

Levaquin is a medicine to treat bacterial infections. It is also used to slow or prevent anthrax after the exposure.

It refers to quinolone antibiotics. The medicine is used to kill sensitive bacteria.

Avoid taking it in case of allergy to any ingredient in the medicine or any quinolone antibiotics.

Avoid it in case of having low potassium levels, irregular heartbeat. Do not combine it with cisapride and antiarrhythmics.

Consult the physician if any of side effects are bothersome or persist: diarrhea, constipation, gases, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, nausea, pain in stomach.

Levaquin has a high risk of problems with tendon, including swelling, pain, tendon breakage, inflammation. Patients over 60 taking corticosteroids and also having heart/kidney/lung transplants are at higher risk. The Achilles tendon is more often affected. Arm, hand, shoulders may be affected, too. It may happen while taking Levaquin or within some months of discontinuation.

Tendom problem sings include soreness, pain, tendon/joint swelling or redness, bruising of tendon area after an injury, snaps or pops in joints or tendons, or inability to move tendons. Contact the physician then.
